A Pandemic of Broken Families…

Causing Kids in El Salvador to turn to gangs, drugs, and sex trafficking!

Ryan Moore,

Builders International Director

The passion of missionaries Don and Terri Triplett is energizing. They work nonstop in El Salvador to see lives radically changed by the Gospel. The completion of King’s Castle Marriage and Family Counseling Center is the next strategic move to see the ministry expand its reach even further to strengthen families. At Builders International, we share their burden for teaching biblical family principles.

According to Don, “Many homes in El Salvador have parents that live together, but never get married.”

They are so poverty-stricken that they can not cover the necessary expenses that are involved in a wedding.

Another fallout resulting from this socioeconomic standard is that it creates scenarios where the mother is left to raise fatherless children.
Help Needed To Complete...
Marriage and Family Counseling Center!
Kids in El Salvador are turning to gangs, drugs, and sex trafficking as a result of broken families. The Marriage and Family Counseling Center will provide a place to host families and teach biblical values to help break this destructive cycle.

the DESCRIPTION
The new Marriage and Family Counseling Center at King’s Castle will provide a place to host retreats and conferences to teach biblical family values. This three-story facility will include 20 family housing rooms, two conference spaces for up to 50 people, and space for a clinic on the first level.

the BENEFITS
The Marriage and Family Counseling Center will transform El Salvador one family at a time! Families will receive training in biblical values. Strong families produce children who have a better opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to society as adults. This helps put an end to the cycle of the dysfunctional home. This strategic change is setting up the King’s Castle ministry for even greater success for the future.

When you read this letter to the end you're going to discover exactly how to change the life of a family in El Salvador.
The Tripletts had been absorbing the magnitude of this population’s problem, given more than 40 years of experience living in Central America. Don and Terri have come to embrace a strategy they describe as, “Transforming El Salvador, one family at a time.” As Don explained, “We can’t just expect that healthy families will emerge out of chaos without first fixing the problems.”

Don and Terri knew there had to be a change in strategy. Don remarked, “It’s not enough to get the kids on fire, if the parents just put it out.”

Over time, it became obvious that it was most effective to work with the family unit as a whole; both children and parents need to be taught in the ways of a biblical lifestyle.

For years the Tripletts' consensus had been, "If we can just reach the children with the Gospel, the nation would change. However, we later discovered that this wasn't completely accurate. We needed to reach the WHOLE family! At that point, we were finally able to break out of that mindset and get the results that were urgently needed."
THE STORY.
Let me tell you a quick story about David and Karla. God had been preparing Karla and her husband for ministry in El Salvador with the Tripletts. Karla attended UNICEF training for ministering to children, completing her MA Degree. Both she and David served as marriage and family pastors, starting with 12 role-model families, in which the parents were already married.

The plan was well underway for constructing the necessary facility and to dedicate it as the Marriage and Family Counseling Center

Already, they were having success with those 12 families. You see, Karla and David were playing a vital role in helping launch a marriage and family ministry. All the necessary components were coming together, which was a major step toward getting underway.

Then the unthinkable happened! Karla’s life was tragically cut short due to injuries sustained in a fire!
What Now?
Missionaries Don and Terri found themselves struggling with a whole new reality -- the Marriage and Family Counseling Center was suddenly shaken to the core!

As you can imagine, this left the Tripletts not only hurting with David over the loss of Karla, but feeling desperate for the families in that country. They consider this ministry vital, knowing its success would bring stability to those family units.

Further, it would foster home environments where parents would have learned how to raise emotionally, mentally, and spiritually well-balanced children.

HOW WILL THE MINISTRY BE CARRIED ON IN KARLA'S ABSENCE?
She was so familiar with the education and training steps necessary for parents to put their home life together as God had intended from the beginning. She was so well prepared for that undertaking. Without Karla, it appeared the work would not go any farther. There was no Plan B.
KARLA'S HUSBAND STEPS UP TO THE PLATE
They had to find a way forward for the work. Karla’s husband, David, had worked faithfully by her side...but how could he move forward without her?

In time, he agreed that he would continue leading their ministry. Thanks to David's continued commitment, in honor of Karla’s life and calling, the Marriage and Family Counseling ministry will now continue!

Additionally, the decision was made to name the chapel of the Marriage and Family Center "The Karla Rodriguez de Alas Chapel" in her memory.
MOVING FORWARD.
With David at the helm, the ministry and work are ready to continue...and that is where YOU come in!

The Marriage and Family Counseling Center needs a place to meet, to host families, and to teach.

Without your giving, there will be no place to host the ministry and build the families of El Salvador.
Realizing the wisdom in his insight to focus on families, Don put into practice the long-accepted, sage discernment, “A functional family produces functional children.” And guess what? This strategic change is setting the ministry up for even greater success.
When broken families in a community reach a certain percentage, a breakdown in society occurs...children turn to gangs, drugs, and/or become vulnerable to sex trafficking, etc. No wonder the Tripplets were struggling!
It really helped them to accept that this dysfunctional society’s problem was not their fault. As Don explained, in the first place, these homes were not preparing their next generation for being well-rounded young adults.

He had discovered that the child-rearing foundations in these homes were not solid.

And secondly, that made the children vulnerable to corrupting influences (i.e., gangs, drugs, sex trafficking, etc.).

Under the present cultural influences, the family members may live together under one roof, but the parents are not legally married. Because of this, problems such as chaos, no shared family name, and basic instability of the family unit remain.
We found the enemy...and it is not the gangs!
Broken families are at the root of the problem.

“The statistical data showed that a 1% increase in the proportion of single-parent families in a neighborhood is associated with a 3% increase in an adolescent’s level of violence.”

“He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the hearts of the children to their parents.” [Malachi 4:6a NIV]
Once they realized strong families produce children who have a better opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to society as adults, that's when they started to understand how to change the life of a family in El Salvador!

Putting these new insights into practice became useful toward being able to prevent the broken relationships in families. The Tripletts were on their way. From broken homes, chaos, and confusion, to applying these basic truths to this huge problem would surely change the future of families in El Salvador.
CYCLE BROKEN.
A center for serving the need for counseling will not only simplify the process for how to change the life of a family in El Salvador; but in so doing, it will also help create cohesive, happy families. It provides support to children who will flourish and grow up to contribute to society and, ultimately, will end the cycle of broken families!
And this is why we are partnering with Don and Terry to help build the "Marriage and Family Counseling Center."
Our Project Life Certified seal means you can have confidence knowing you are helping where HOPE is needed most.
Here are a few benefits that will have a positive effect on the future of El Salvador:
  • People are receiving salvation. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” [Luke 19:10]
  • Transforming families so they can have a stable home, where children receive guidance and support.
  • Raising children who will experience a wholesome childhood, maturing toward a well-rounded adulthood.
  • Children who come from strong families will produce strong families; and thus, end the cycle of the dysfunctional home.
  •  Establish communities that have biblical family values so strong family models will become an influence to others.
STATS TO CONSIDER
A study using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health explored the relationship between family structure and risk of violent acts in neighborhoods. The results revealed that if the number of fathers is low in a neighborhood, then there is an increase in acts of teen violence.

The statistical data showed that a 1% increase in the proportion of single-parent families in a neighborhood is associated with a 3% increase in an adolescent’s level of violence.

In other words, adolescents who live in neighborhoods with lower proportions of single-parent families and who report higher levels of family integration commit less violence.

  •   85% of all children who show behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes.
  •   71% of pregnant teens come from fatherless home   85% of inmates in prison come from fatherless homes.

Find satisfaction in giving!
Bonus #2
Receive more than you give!
Proverbs 11:24
Bonus #3
Improve the life of a family in El Salvador!
The total value of all this is immeasurable
WHY?
Because, without intervention in El Salvador, the consequence of violence will overrun the country, broken families will agitate a downward spiral of cultural integrity. A prison population will be created and eventually crime control will dominate the country’s budget and other creative resources. With this plan, this bleak future can be avoided for many families, cities, and likely an entire nation!
